Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in Inverness and the Highlands

OCD Therapy in Inverness and Highland

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can involve distressing intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviours that feel impossible to stop. These cycles can be exhausting and isolating, even when you know the thoughts and actions are irrational.

At Highland Psychological Services, we offer expert, evidence-based support to help individuals manage OCD, break free from unhelpful patterns, and regain a sense of control.

Understanding OCD

OCD can appear in many forms, including:

  • Fears of contamination and excessive cleaning

  • Repetitive checking or seeking reassurance

  • Obsessions with order, symmetry, or perfection

  • Difficulty discarding items (hoarding)

  • Distressing religious or moral thoughts

  • Intrusive thoughts about harm or inappropriate behaviour ("Pure O")

While these subtypes may seem different, they share a common thread: intrusive thoughts create anxiety, and compulsive behaviours, temporarily relieve that anxiety, thus reinforcing the cycle.

What Causes OCD?

OCD often develops from a combination of genetics, brain chemistry, and life experiences. Triggers can include trauma, bereavement, stress, illness, parenthood, major life changes, or a family history of anxiety-related conditions. Symptoms often build gradually, making it difficult to pinpoint a clear cause.

Our therapeutic approach includes taking time to gently explore these experiences and understand what may be contributing to your OCD.

How We Can Help

We use proven approaches like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a type of cognitive behavioural therapy that helps you face fears and resist compulsions in a safe, supported way. Our therapists work at your pace, offering a compassionate space to explore even the most uncomfortable thoughts without judgment.
