Therapy for New and Expectant Parents

Perinatal Mental Health Support in Inverness

Pregnancy and parenthood can bring joy, but also emotional challenges..

At Highland Psychological Services, we provide therapy to help navigate perinatal mental health challenges. We work with mothers, fathers, and non-birthing partners, offering a compassionate space to feel grounded and supported.

What is Perinatal Mental Health?

Perinatal mental health refers to your emotional wellbeing during pregnancy and the first year after birth. Common challenges include:

  • Low mood, anxiety, or emotional numbness

  • Difficulty bonding with your baby

  • Intrusive or distressing thoughts, including fears of harm

  • Feelings of being overwhelmed

  • Birth trauma, postnatal depression, or OCD

  • Grief related to miscarriage, stillbirth, or fertility struggles

  • Fatigue, sleep disturbance or loss of appetite.

These experiences can affect anyone, regardless of how “ready” they felt for parenthood and stigma, expectations and pressure  make it hard to speak up.

Fathers and Partners

Around 1 in 10 fathers experience post natal depression, with many reporting anxiety, stress and emotional withdrawal during this major life change.

Fathers and partners may experience:

  • Guilt

  • A lack of connection

  • Birth trauma

  • Pressure to “stay strong”

Therapy offers a space where men and non-birthing partners can be open and supported without judgement.

How We Can Help

We understand that reaching out for support can feel vulnerable, but it is a powerful first step towards feeling more like yourself again. Our therapists can help:

  • Make sense of difficult emotions

  • Process trauma or loss

  • Rebuild confidence, manage anxiety, low mood and identity shifts.

  • Develop self compassion as a parent.

Whether you are looking for a safe place to talk, coping strategies, or long term support, we tailor therapy to meet your needs at this sensitive stage of life.
